ABOUT THIS FAIR: |
LAPADA, The Association of Art & Antiques Dealers, is taking part in London Craft Week, which runs from May 9-15. The event, which celebrates outstanding creativity and craftsmanship in its many forms, aligns perfectly with LAPADA as an organization that champions heritage and craftsmanship. LAPADA is hosting a special tour of members’ galleries on Kensington Church Street at 9:30 on Thursday May 12 called, “About Time: Discovering the Craftsmanship of Antique Clocks". While the majority of LCW events focus on contemporary craft or a revival of heritage skills, LAPADA’s tour will explore the incredible craftsmanship of antique furniture. For hundreds of years, clocks were made by specialist craftsmen with skills nearly extinct today and with the very highest quality materials. The combination of skill and materials has allowed these items to continue to be used for centuries. Led by LAPADA CEO Freya Simms, the tour offers the opportunity to learn about the making of these exquisite objects directly from leading specialist dealers. |
Butchoff Antiques - Rare Louis XV Style 'Elephant' Clock, c. 1840.
Highlights of the tour include an important example of a French ormolu elephant clock in the Louis XV style from Butchoff Antiques. Clocks incorporating animals reigned supreme during the Louis XV period, at a time when curiosity for new cultures was at its height. The exoticism found expression in the accounts of explorers describing rhinoceros, lions and elephants, which were enthusiastically absorbed into European decorative arts. Highlights also include a rare Charles II parquetry long clock made in London circa 1675 by James (Jacobus) Markwick from Howard Walwyn Antique Clocks. This clock of small proportions is veneered with olive wood oysters. It also features two striking ebony & holly star inlays. The tour will begin at Butchoff Antiques and stop at Sandberg Antiques, and Howard Walwyn Antiques. Time allowing, the tour will also stop in the galleries of other LAPADA members on Kensington Church Street. LAPADA, The Association of Art & Antiques Dealers, is also hosting an online exhibition of members’ stock from May 10 to June 10 to commemorate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee this year. The event will commemorate this historic event using the wealth of extraordinary piecesof its members.
