Robert Norman Hepple RA RP (18 May 1908 – 3 January 1994) was best known for his portraits of the British royal family. He was elected a member of the Royal Society of Portrait Painters in 1948 and served as their President from 1979 to 1983. Elected as a Royal Academician in1961.

Coinciding with the Royal Horticultural Society’s Chelsea Flower Show going virtual, a number of The Cotswolds Art & Antique Dealers' Association members are highlighting the inspiration that flowers have had on artists and craftsmen around the world over the years on Instagram (@cadaartandantiquesassociation). From Monday 18 until Saturday 23 May 2020, posts will include Chinese porcelain and textiles from Catherine Hunt Oriental Antiques, pottery like a collection of six English pearlware pottery shell edge platters with blue shell edge and stunning Pratt coloured baskets of flowers from John Howard and from Hall-Bakker Decorative Arts a hand-crafted figure entitled “The Tulip Woman” by Charles Vyse. Ceramics and glass include Baccarat paperweights from Delomosne & Son Ltd. |
Sarah Colegrave Fine Art - Bluebells by Marie Palmer-Smith, Gouache and silver paint, unframed. Bears artist’s studio stamp on the reverse. Size 57.15cm (22½ inches) high x 46.99cm (18½ inches) wide. C.1930 and priced at £110.
Architectural Heritage - A pair of decorative French iron and toll work garden gates having scroll work embellished with toll work swags and urn with flowers and foliage, Circa 1930. Size Height 128.00cm [50.39 inches], Width 126.00cm [49.61 inches] , £2,400.

Rare items such as an 18th century silk embroidered tea caddy is a find from Mark Goodger Antiques. Each side has beautifully detailed fine silk embroidery depicting floral cornucopia urns. Temple Rare Books has a first edition, comprising eight volumes, of The Romance of Nature; Or The Flower-Seasons Illustrated by Louisa Anne Twamley, published in London by Charles Tilt in 1836. Paintings, watercolours and illustrations from Sarah Colegrave Fine Art fit right in, as Sarah Colegrave has a Flower Show exhibition on her own website at the moment. Other paintings include floral still lifes from Haynes Fine Art and Trinity House both galleries having works by Marcel Dyf and Mary Fedden as well as other well-known artists’s paintings. Newman Fine Art has a still life of Roses in a Vase by Norman Hepple RA, RP 1908-1994, better known for his portraits of the royal family, who served as the President of the Royal Society of Portrait Painters from 1979 to 1983. Strachan Fine Art has a portrait of Augustus John’s wife Ida (née Nettleship) wearing a hat with flowers, circa 1900, by William Rothenstein. |

Trinity House - Alice Squire (British, 1840 – 1936), Gathering Wild Flowers, watercolour on paper. Size: 8.3 x 2.5 in./ 21.0 x 6.3 cm. Signed lower left. Alice Squire is a 19th Century artist who worked predominantly in watercolour. Squire was born the daughter of a baker in London in 1840. She is known for her tranquil scenes which commonly revisit the motif of women conducting various tasks within a rural setting. Gathering Wild Flowers depicts a young girl gathering flowers within a lush scene of greenery. This work is an example of Alice Squire’s romantic scenes which simultaneously evoke both a sense of tranquillity and nostalgia for a simpler time.
