ABOUT THIS VIRTUAL EXHIBITION: |
As the effects of the oncoming pandemic became clearer, I was in a fortunate position to be able to plan and respond rapidly. Lorfords Antiques was able to pass on the financial support it was receiving to our suppliers; easing the burden of overheads on retail businesses that were undoubtedly going to bear the brunt as the economy slowly tightened and closed. As it happened, we continued to sell a little online and to maintain an, albeit reduced, income for most of our suppliers. By mid-April the pattern had stabilised and I felt fortunate to have this time to concentrate on the future of the business, to spend more time talking with loved ones than usual and to become increasingly aware that I had to find something positive to do – to give back. It is always lovely to be appreciated – and the Thursday clanging of pans was both a coming together of community as well as a show of support – but it doesn’t help those in need to feed their children, get the shopping… or cope with the unimaginable (to us not on the front line) stress, fear and exhaustion that have become a part of many NHS workers’ everyday lives. Issues around mental health have been important in most of my adult life. From my own personal therapy, yoga and meditation, to the support of friends and family, helping maintain good health is so vital – and to those struggling whilst helping others to survive, we have a duty. |
WHY YOU SHOULD VISIT THIS FAIR: |
When I read Sophie Conran’s post about Duty to Care, I knew I could do something to help. We were already planning an online sale to help our suppliers – by donating all our commission to a fantastic charitable cause I felt like we had achieved my goal. We would be supporting both our suppliers and the NHS workers in need – by engaging a network of dealers, connections and customers I would be able to use the businesses as the tools to help. Tickets are £120 – Lorfords will cover all costs of transaction so every penny donated will end up with Duty to Care. |
