Antiques News & Fairs - The Pavilions of Harrogate Decorative Antiques & Fine Art Fair - 28 – 30 January 2022
Walker Galleries - Oil on canvas, signed ‘A Yorkshire Haytime’ by Owen Bowen. Size 17 x 21 inches and priced at £3,000.

ABOUT THIS FAIR:

Opening the new year caledar at Cooper Events will be The Pavilions of Harrogate Decorative Antiques & Fine Art Fair at The Great Yorkshire Showground, from 28–30 January 2022, the first of 3 editions in 2022 at this prestigious venue in Harrogate which has been described as the antiques capital of the North. The fair is held in two large suites, fully carpeted and with in-house catering from Fodders, who are a well-known Yorkshire firm of caterers and have a good deli shop and restaurant café on the Showground site.

This fair has a stellar collection of art dealers including Sutcliffe Galleries and Walker Galleries from Harrogate, Rowles Fine Art from Ludlow, Granta Fne Art and Ellis Fine Art.

Paintings by the Yorkshire artist Owen Bowen (1873-1976) will be showcased by Walker Galleries from Montpellier Parade. The paintings are typical of his finest work and reveal the influence of his teacher, William Gilbert, a leader of the respected Staithes Group of artists, at the Leeds School of Art. Gilbert inspired Bowen to visit Staithes and the Yorkshire coast and countryside which provided inspiration for many of his finest pictures.

Bowen enjoyed commercial success from a young age at the inaugural Yorkshire Union of Artists exhibition in 1888, where he won two medals in the amateur category. However, following a disagreement with the Secretary two years later at the age of only seventeen he was expelled. After several successful years as a commercial artist, Bowen opened his own School of Painting in Leeds. In 1904 he was elected a member of the Staithes Art Club.

Bowen lived a long and productive life and travelled widely, to Holland, Austria, Scotland, and Wales, and exhibited at many of the national societies, including the Royal Academy, the Royal Scottish Academy, the Royal Hibernian Academy, the Royal Institute of Oil Painters (which he was elected a member of in 1916), and the Royal Cambrian Academy, where he served as President between 1947-1954. He died in Leeds on the 17 September 1967, at the experienced age of ninety-four.

Among the paintings by Owen Bowen on sale at the fair will be ‘A Yorkshire Haytime’, oil on canvas, which featured in an exhibition at the Royal Institute of Painters in 1917. It will be on offer for £3,000. Another, ‘Roses’, shown above, will be on sale for £3,200.
