Chester's Farm Gallery - Emile Gallé's Lucky Owl? This figure of an owl is high fired with a flambé
glaze and standing 32 cm tall, is technically as fine as the work being made by other pioneering
French potters of the time. There is a surviving photograph of the owl (or a sister figure from the
same edition) on Gallé's desk in his workshop, and also it can be seen perching on the shelf of the
artist's glass oven exhibit at the 1900 Paris Exposition. It seems that Gallé may have had a special
place for it in his affections - perhaps it was even his "lucky owl". Priced at £6,500.

Exhibitor Elaine Phillips Antiques will be showing a fine selection of authentic English country furniture. Says Louise Phillips: ‘We always look forward to meeting clients old and new at Harrogate, particularly as after 45 years in the town. We will be showing a range of stock which will appeal not only to collectors but to anyone seeking to furnish their home with unique pieces. The bonus of buying antiques is that they are a perfect example of recycling.’ Louise will be joined by fellow Yorkshire dealers Jack Shaw and Highland Antiques who both offer fine English and Scottish silver; John Newton Antiques who specialises in fine porcelain and studio pottery; Mark Buckley Antiques with fine and formal English antique furniture and Ellis Fine Art specialising in oil paintings and town furniture. From Harrogate, Sutcliffe Galleries show fine paintings. Other specialists across the fair offer jewellery, ceramics, 20th century glass, Mid-Century Modern art and designs, period lighting, Art Nouveau and Art Deco. Fair organiser Sue Ede, of Cooper Events told ANF: "This is a very popular fair with our audience because we provide such a wide range of pieces, from the 16th to the 20th century, from classic and traditional art to Mid-Century Modern and decorative designer pieces. The late Autumn date in the run up to Christmas ensures a busy event. For collectors of porcelain, jewellery, the Decorative Arts and talking-point decorative pieces for the home or garden, and for lovers of fine art from many of the best painters and sculptors from the past 200 years, this is a unmissable event." |
