Antiques News - Behind the Portals: Tom Johnson of RubyLux

Tom Johnson, CEO and founder of luxury online marketplace, RubyLUX.

ANFRubyLUX just had its one year anniversary; why did you choose to create this online marketplace?

TJ: The idea for RubyLUX transpired when the industry was in desperate need of a modernised digital marketplace. Other sites were outdated in their technology, practices, and style. I knew dealers and consumers deserved an interactive luxury site that would give them state-of-the-art technology, transparent communication practices, ease of use. RubyLUX is intended to provide all of this and our vision is to improve the industry not just the bottom line. I am also the founder and CEO of RubyLane.com which has an 18 year history of success as an online marketplace. RubyLUX is now the online interactive marketplace for the best of luxury design, past & present, offering antiques, 20th century, decor, fine art, jewellery and watches.

ANF: RubyLUX features such a vast array of decor, antiques, and art. How do you source your dealers and choose what pieces will be sold on your site?

TJ:  I pride myself in maintaining strong, personal relationships with our expert dealers: we strive to collaborate with the best dealers to offer the finest inventory and provide the most reputable customer service. We now have an exclusive partnership with CINOA, the international federation of dealer associations who represent the very best fine art and antiques dealers in the world. This partnership will not only allow RubyLUX to grow but continues to connect us with the world's best dealers.

ANF: Tell me a little bit more about the CINOA and RubyLUX partnership?

TJ:  CINOA is the international federation of dealer associations who represent the very best fine art and antiques dealers in the world. This new industry partnership is a perfect marriage between RubyLUX's hi-tech resources and CINOA's exceptional inventory in order to reach the consumers of tomorrow. The cultural preservation of art and antiques is of the utmost importance to RubyLUX & CINOA. We feel the solution to ever changing environment is a strong e-commerce and technology driven approach along with educational and Co-op advertising programs with antique and art show sponsorships.

ANF:  We know you have the beneficial relationship with CINOA and benefits to the trade. What are the direct benefits and highlights for dealers who want to sell their valued pieces on the site?

TJ:  We pride ourselves in our personal customer service approach, making ourselves available to the dealers. We are proactive, we want are dealers to succeed and that can only be done by offering them transparent services and listening to their needs, wants, and suggestions for the platform. We don't want dealer to contact us just when there is a technical malfunction, we want to be a resource and a teammate in their corner. That is why RubyLUX has a simple flat rate fee structure with no commissions on sales. Dealers are able to help the platform grow and shape features on the site to benefit their needs.

ANF:  Trends continuously change and shift especially what styles and periods are most popular. According to your buyers, what periods or pieces are many gravitating toward today?

TJ:  An eclectic look in design is incredibly popular, it is no secret that mixing antiques with newly manufactured designs are trending in the design world. We are seeing buying trends of mixing 17th Century Italian Credenzas with 1980's Italian glass chests. Hundreds of years between design periods but classic styles and detail brings items like this together beautifully. We are currently seeing a rise in sales of antiques chests, lighting, and jewellery.

ANF:  What is the new DESIGN feature?

TJ:   RubyLUX has officially launched the first stage of it latest tool for the design community: DESIGN. The DESIGN tab located on the main page includes easy to use, clickable sections; Designers, Trade Services, Blog, and Design Centers. The latest resource to the luxury e-commerce site RubyLUX, is devoted to being an asset to the design community by providing useful information, content, and tools necessary for their business. Ground breaking tools that will redefine and accelerate the way Designers source items and shop online will be deployed later this year within this program.

ANF:  Anything else we should know about RubyLUX?

TJ:   On RubyLUX, you can discover some of the world's most esteemed sellers such as Clinton Howell, who specializes in 18th Century English Antiques, to Juan Montoya, who is one of the the most acclaimed and prolific interior designers in the world today. With the wide range of beautiful designs from the Middle Ages to today, RubyLUX can be your one-stop marketplace for all things exceptional.

ANF:  What inspired your turn into the antique and design world, Tom?

JW:   RubyLUX got a jump start from the web site I have developed and refined over the past 18 years, Ruby Lane. I fell in love with the world of antiques when I first started collecting even before that. With the combination of those, we've created two successful online marketplaces that I am proud to say helps continue to grow the antique world.
