Amsterdam University Press have proudly announced the release of 'Rembrandt: The Painter Thinking', by world-renowned Rembrandt specialist, Ernst van de Wetering.
van de Wetering, emeritus professor of art history at the University of Amsterdam, gives fascinating insights into the intellectual aspects of Rembrandt's artistic processes.
It is the sequel to his 1997 book, 'Rembrandt: The Painter at Work', which explored the materials, techniques and studio practices Rembrandt employed.
Though few statements on the art of painting were made by Rembrandt, van de Wetering was able to reconstruct his theory of art from the lessons and ideas expressed by one of Rembrandt's pupils, Samuel van Hoogstraten, in his own book on the art of painting.
van de Wetering focuses on Rembrandt's views on human visual perception, and draws connections between his thought processes and his paintings, as well as the work of van Hoogstraten and other contemporary artists.
This is a beautifully illustrated book that reveals how Rembrandt became a revolutionary and inspirational painter, while also exploring the theory and practices of painting in the Dutch Golden Age.
'Rembrant: The Painter Thinking' by Ernst van de Wetering
March 2016, 356 pages, 300 colour illustrations
