July 2024: ANTIQUES NEWS & FAIRS is moving to a new home at The House Directory - where antiques meet interior design! A new and exciting collaboration aligning our 2 brands for a wider reach. Stay tuned for more news!
Margaret Schwartz and Kelly McGuire of Modern Antiquarian have been on a VIP antique hunt with Toma Clark Haines, The Antiques Diva and Architectural Digest in Hudson, NY, and we are delighted to share their blog with its millenial take on the world of antiques and design.
Over the river and through the woods... for the best antiquing we go!
This week started fabulously, with a trip up to Hudson, NY to go hunting with Architectural Digest, our friend Toma, The Antiques Diva, and a seriously excellent coterie of other designers! We had a truly lovely day tracking down treasures in many different styles and from different periods, and having lively discussions about all of it! And the fantastic Hudson Valley food scene really didn't hurt either. Now we just have to wait for the article to come out... or you could come with us on a tour!
The table we just couldn't live without!
While we were in Hudson with everyone, we purchased an antique Indonesian low table perfect for a cocktail table. We absolutely fell in love- it is in it's original condition with hand painted scenes on the top and legs. We love the color and unique patina of this early 1900s piece. You can see more of it on our Instagram!

Seriously unique - another really interesting find, but one that didn't come home with us, is this chest. You can see the original piece has been used as the base by a truly talented wood carver who is playing with both the contrast between the dark stain and the underlying wood, as well as the smooth original surface and the fantastical flowers and vines that have been added. With the addition of what seemed to be the original finishings, it was a truly unique piece.

Next time, you can come too!
We love-loved taking a trip with Architectural Digest and the other designers, but it is also really a marvelous time for us when we head up with our clients. After all, it can be fun just to look around with no goal in mind and debate the finer points of the pieces, but it's an equally great challenge to go hunting with something relatively specific in mind. They're just different kinds of treasure hunts. So if you've got something in mind... drop us a line!
Ashley Longshore x Bergdorf Goodman "Palette" Restaurant
We hope your week is going well. Last week was the opening of Palette at Bergdorf Goodman. The fabulous artist Ashley Longshore has completely transformed the space into her mind's wonderland and it is to die for. We met up with Toma for a quick business lunch and enjoyed some delicious salads and even a Lobster BLT... While the food was delicious and the cocktails and iced coffees refreshing our favorite part was without a doubt the surrounding artwork.

The Mix: The Art of Combining Antiques in Contemporary Spaces
On Tuesday June 5th, Margaret and I attended the Greenwich Design District Day of Design, organized by Beth Dempsey of Images & Details based in Darien CT. We discussed the first talk we attended a bit in our post on Tuesday and today we are going to dive into the discussion hosted at Putnam+Mason. Toma Clarke Haines of The Antiques Diva was on the panel discussing The Art of Combining Antiques in Contemporary Spaces with Robert Passal and Tori Mellott.
