 Antiques News & Fairs - The Chester Antiques Fair 11 – 14 October 2018

Acorn Antiques - Snuff Box Confirms Origins of Chester Golf Club.

ABOUT THIS FAIR:

Chester Racecourse Grandstand will take on a new identity from 11-14 October 2018 when Penman Antiques Fairs move in for their annual Chester Antiques Fair.

From Lady Lucan's Ballenciaga dress to lush Edwardian sofas to luxurious silver with Chester connections, the exhibitors have rounded up some exciting objects for visitors to this long standing event.

Followers of 20th century history will be keen to visit Fashion Fandango who will be exhibiting that Balenciaga of Paris designer dress once worn by Lady Lucan, the late wife of Lord Lucan, with a ticket price of £195. Quite a bargain!

A rare solid silver antique snuff box on sale from Clive Phillips of Acorn Antiques will provide firm evidence of the late 19th century origins of Chester Golf Club. The snuff box is engraved with the words Chester Golf Club May 21st 1896.

Today’s Chester Golf Club dates its history to 1901. In recent years, information emerged revealing how the origins of the club are thought to date back to 1891 when it was located at Sealand, Flintshire, and was also referred to as the Connahs Quay Golf Club or, as in the 1905 Nisbet's Golf Yearbook, the Cheshire Golf Club. The existence of this rare snuff box with its engraving is firm evidence that confirms that history and that the Sealand club was widely known as Chester Golf Club.

The snuff box priced at £565, was made by the Birmingham silversmiths George Unite & Sons and is hallmarked Birmingham 1878. It is thought it was engraved as a gift to a Club member.

Georgian furniture, silver and china for the dining room to smart 20th century sculptures and paintings, the Chester Antiques Fair offers plenty of choice for both the seasoned collector and first-time visitor.

Forty specialist dealers take part, taking over the three floors of the Racecourse Grandstand, several transforming the top floor boxes into room set displays. Many are members of the LAPADA and BADA, the leading trade associations. With everything for sale, prices run from £20 up to £25,000. All exhibits are labelled with the price, date and description - all of which are carefully checked by the Vetting Committees for quality and authenticity.

The Chester Antiques Fair has been running since 1989 and is a major fixture in the social calendar in the Northwest. Visitors come from across the region and far beyond, many enjoying a visit this historic city and its many attractions.
