Westland London reveal: Coveted Collectables - Most Wanted and Where

From C18th Beneman bureaux to C19th Linke pieces, it appears that furniture tops the list of antique items most desired by UK collectors.  However, the rest of the world has very different ideas about what can be considered the most desirable of antiques.

Research carried out by antique fireplace dealer Westland London, found that Brits search Google for the keywords antique furniture an average of 3,600 times a month, not including variations of the keywords that raise the figure even higher.

Although furniture makes it into the top three of most countries' list (with the exception of France, where sculpture, jewellery and clocks are favoured), only the USA shares the UK’s love for furniture, to the tune of a massive 10,000 searches per month, not including keyword variations.

Britain's second most popular antique is jewellery, at over 2,400 searches - a passion shared with Germany, France and the Netherlands.  However, India, widely recognised as the world's hub for jewellery, was far and away the leader in this search category at 8,200 per month, which is unsurprising, given that jewellery accounts for 6-7% of the country's GDP.  Furniture is not as hotly-favoured here though, at just 1500 searches.

Globally, clocks rated highly as a search, and took third place in the UK with 1300 searches.

In the UK, antique clocks took third place with 1,300 searches.  Globally, clocks rated highly as a search, with the exception of Russia and the UAE, who share a love for mirrors.  Although people in the UAE are not very interested in buying antiquities online, it was found that they search for mirrors ten times more than any other form of antique.  Mirrors also took second place with the US, at an average of 3,600 searches per month.

Sculpture rated top of the list with France and Russia, though it receives no mention in any other country.  It is believed that this represents the fact that value comes down to time and location as much as the intrinsic qualities of the products.

Westland London commented on the research: "While it’s perhaps not surprising to see the same three categories – furniture, clocks and jewellery – holding the top slots in the majority of countries, the real interest lies where there’s variation. It just goes to show that although the world is getting smaller, every country still has its own distinctive character."
