Antiques News & Fairs - Olympia Art Antiques Fair 20-27 June

When the Art & Antiques Fair Olympia returns for an epic 46th year as the UK’s longest running vetted fair from 20-27 June 2018, a newly forged partnership for 4 of those 8 days with
House & Garden Festival alongside other consumer events taking place at Olympia - Grow London, Spirit of Summer and House, will catapult this august event into the 21st century by blending a very high profile and successful contemporary marketplace with the fair to offer an exceptional shopping destination across trade and public platforms. This influx of buyers who may not be regular visitors to antiques fairs should certainly benefit exhibitors. The sovereignty of the fair will remain intact with a clearly defined and beautifully decorated tunnel entrance between the fair and the other events taking place at Olympia.

Mary Claire Boyd, Fair Director at The Art & Antiques Fair Olympia told ANF: “Olympia in June is now the destination for all things arts, antiques and interiors related. It offers the chance to find that elusive, truly one-off piece that can't be found on the high street and that so many of us dream of owning.

The 46th edition of this flagship fair includes exhibitors who can only be seen at this UK show, while others save and restore their best pieces for this eight day, keenly anticipated event. This will be the first year it will be held within the House & Garden Festival for four days, offering a whole new dimension to the fair, enabling visitors access to all four extensive events.”

Exhibitor: Westland London -

A large Venetian naval lantern, that would once have been mounted on a naval vessel to send light signals to the rest of a naval fleet. A grand lantern such as this would have been owned by a nobleman, and they were often converted to hanging lanterns - as this one has been - to hang in the entrances of grand palazzi. Remarkably similar lanterns can be seen Andrea Vicentino's monumental painting of the Battle of Lepanto in the Palazzo Ducale, painted in 1595.  Rare surviving gilding. 17th century. Converted to electricity in the early 20th century.

TOURS AND EXPERT TALKS

An outstanding programme of talks and events will take place this year with full details here: Experts Theatre.

One of the many highlights include a talk by Patricia Maitland, who is currently working with a team of volunteers restoring the garden of the Leighton House Museum, on the The Victorian Garden of Leighton House. Eminent Victorian artist Lord Frederick Leighton, a leading member of the Holland Park circle of artists, built his studio house in 1866 he also set out a garden which remains almost unchanged today. This talk will trace the garden’s varying fortunes from Lord Leighton’s time and after his death in 1896, its restoration in the mid 1990s and finally the current work to reinvigorate the planting plan.  It will look at where the garden sits within the Victorian garden styles of the time and some of the challenges faced when maintaining a city garden both in the late 1800s and today.

Visitors also have access to the panoply of events and workshops organised by Spirit of Summer and details are available here: Spirit of Summer Workshops.

Exhibitor: Harry Moore Gwyn Fine Art - Ethelbert White

A keynote exhibitor presentation will be mounted by Harry Moore Gwyn Fine Art who will present an exhibition of a selection of Ethelbert White’s work from one private collection. It was built up over the last two decades and focused primarily on the art created before the outbreak of the Second World War. White is recognised today as one of the great British wood engravers of the inter-war years and one of the most distinct and original members of the early twentieth century English pastoral tradition. White’s interpretation of landscape, whether of English farmland or Spanish hill towns is one of the mostly instantly recognisable in inter-war British art. He was strongly influenced by his own skills as a printmaker (Peyton Skipwith has referred to him as “a draughtsman with an engraver’s eye”) and touching on the graphic modernism of the Art Deco poster.
