Wilsons Antiques of Worthing - a unique cartoon / letter by Dame Laura Knight (1877-1970)

written on behalf of herself and husband Harold Knight (1874-1961).


ABOUT THIS FAIR:

Established over 45 years ago, the popular Petersfield Antiques Fair has grown in popularity year on year and is one of the most consistently successful provincial antiques fairs in the South.

 

The fair offers a good mix of traditional antiques and collectables with no datelines but all exhibits vetted for authenticity and correct labelling.

 

There will be 39 Exhibitors in total with LAPADA well represented in the ranks, offering an impressive list of dealers for a provincial fair.

WHY YOU SHOULD VISIT THIS FAIR:

Wilsons Antiques of Worthing will be showing an important Dame Laura Knight (1877-1970) painting of monumental proportions at 6 feet wide x 4 feet high. 'Early morning at the Gipsy Camp’ which was the first painting by Dame Laura Knight purchased by Mr. & Mrs M. Averill at the Royal Academy in  1953 and will be for sale at £125,000.

The painting will be accompanied by unique cartoon / letter by Dame Laura Knight written on behalf of herself and husband Harold Knight (1874-1961) to Morris and Marjorie Averill who were the original purchasers of ‘Early morning at a Gypsy Camp’ painting and are mentioned in Caroline Fox’s book on Laura Knight. They were good customers of Dame Laura Knight and became lifelong friends..

The letter is for sale at £1,245. It is thought to be the only depiction of Laura and Harold Knight together by Laura Knight.

 

The fair offers a wide range of antiques and art, including antique furniture, silver, jewellery (which is especially popular here), paintings, ceramics, prints, lighting, rugs and decorative accessories.  

Many well-known and respected specialists from the antiques world will be present at the event, almost all of them regulars.

Art Deco specialist Jeroen Markies Antiques will bring a range of C20th designer furniture, paintings, lighting and mirrors. Peter Jeffs will specialise in C20th decorative arts. Candice Horley from Twentieth Century Glamour, a regular exhibitor and specialist in Hollywood style costume jewellery from the 1920’s to 1970’s

Not Wanted on Voyage will be returning with a collection of Mid Century and decorative antiques including lighting and collectors' objects. Shapiro & Co. will bring late C19th and early C20th European Art Nouveau silver, glass and jewellery, and Plaza returns with gem-set jewellery.

Other specialist regulars will include Melody Antiques, Wilsons of Worthing, Jupiter Antiques (with a range of early English porcelain), Roger de Ville with rare Staffordshire and commemorative pottery, Eastdale Antiques with fine silver, Art of the Imagination with contemporary illustrative art and sculpture.
