Francesco Bertos (1678 - 1741) One of a Pair of Bronze Groups: The Heroism of Marcus Curtius, Circa 1730

Highlights include a pair of bronze groups by Francesco Bertos (1678-1741) depicting the Heroism of Marcus Curtius, and The Farnese Bull, circa 1730. At 81cm and 74cm high respectively, they are amongst the largest bronzes by Bertos, a prominent Venetian sculptor of the first half of the C18th who counted Tsar Peter the Great as just one of many important patrons. The works represent two scenes from classical literature: Livy's legend of the Heroism of Marcus Curtius and Pliny's tale of the Fable of Dirce. They both carry the coats of arms of the Paduan family Dondi Orologio, who are likely to have commissioned Bertos on the occasion of their ascension to Venetian nobility.
