This week sees the launch of The Art & Antiques Fair Olympia, 2017 from 26 June until 2 July 2017.

When an event of this stature takes place, 160 of the world's leading specialist art and antiques dealers under one roof with an unrivalled choice of over 50,000 pieces to see, it stands to reason that some interesting facts and figures arise!

 

1. The most nostalgic work of art: An Original Garfield Cartoon (pictured below).  Exhibitor: Haynes Fine Art.

2. Rarest wallpaper: Chinese wallpaper panel featuring a Union Jack with the colours back to front (pictured below). Circa 1800. It was very unusual to have European subjects in Chinese wallpaper. Exhibitor: D & M Freedman.

3. Most undervalued: Works on paper by Sir George Clausen. Clausen’s drawings are very well priced compared to his oil paintings. Exhibitor: Harry Moore Gywn.

4. The most upwardly mobile piece of furniture: A C19th French staircase from Geoffrey Stead.


5. Loudest piece on sale: A gong adapted from Whitworth WWII era artillery shell cases and presented by Queen Mary in 1950 (pictured below). Exhibitor: Hatchwell Antiques.

6. Object least likely to be available to buy again: a 3000 year old Bronze Age helmet of which only 12 exist (pictured below). 10 are in museums, one is in a private collection and one is for sale at Olympia. Exhibitor: Alexander Ancient Art.

7. Best piece of furniture for a globe trotter: Contemporary, British-made Orbis table with a map of the world in wood on the surface (pictured below). Offered at £60,000. Exhibitor: Lignae (part of SOFA LONDON within the fair).

8. The most exotic piece: A Seychelles Coconut Standing Cup mounted with Silver (pictured below).  Spanish Colonial from the C17th. Exhibitor: Zarco Antiques.

9. The most transformational piece: A Moche transformational vessel from Peru showing a Shamen who consumed hallucinogenic cactus to reach the spiritual world. Around 1500 years old. Exhibitor: Alexander Ancient Art.


10. Furthest distance travelled by an exhibitor: 5,980 miles, by The Old Corkscrew from South Africa.

11. Most lively debate: Ivan Macquisten talks about appearance and reality in the art world and fake news. Scheduled for Friday 30 June at 2.30pm.


12. Years that the Olympia Exhibition Centre has been standing: 131. It opened on Boxing Day, 1886, with the Hippodrome Circus, comprising 400 performers, 300 horses and six elephants.
